How might you know your car battery needs to be replaced?

Generally, if your car doesn’t start as easily “as it used to,” or it shuts down right after starting, something could be wrong with your current battery and it needs to be replaced.

Oftentimes, batteries need replacing simply because they’re old. Batteries are meant to last maybe three to five years. Eventually old batteries wear out and “die.” If you have a tool to check your battery’s voltage, check and see if it’s 12.6 or higher. If not, it’s probably time to replace it.

If you wake up in the morning and expect to get in the car and drive off but the car has a hard time starting, and/or you frequently have to jump start your car, then it’s time for a battery replacement. Slow engine turnover is another sign that there’s a problem with your battery– it’s not providing enough power.

Do you smell an unpleasant odor that seems to be coming from your battery? That’s most likely sulfuric acid (smells like rotten eggs), which gets emitted when batteries start to die. You should also look to see if the battery case is bulging– when this occurs, your battery cells are essentially swelling up and ready to rupture. If the battery stinks or the case is bulging, have a mechanic check your battery– it probably needs to be replaced. Cars won’t run without batteries. If you suspect you’re having battery issues and you want a professional to “take a look” and assess the situation, don’t hesitate to call AV Bumper-to-Bumper at 661-949-1999.
