Caring for Your Transmission Can Save Thousands

We all know that the transmission is a vital part of your car, and it can be very expensive to fix or replace. Therefore, it’s beneficial to always take care of your transmission to avoid costly and time-consuming problems down the road.

For every twenty degrees over that in which your transmission works, its lifetime is cut in half. The heat will cause oil and other fluid to thicken, harden and potentially evaporate. Aside from the importance of maintaining cool running temps, not maintaining transmission fluid can do major damage as well. This causes gears to rub, and with greatly compromised lubrication, causing greater friction. The metal pieces still forge onward, but not for long without the proper lubrication.

Also quite damaging to transmissions is stopping and going abruptly. Not only can this be detrimental to the mounts on the transmission, it also wears on your gears. Making a habit of slowing to a stop instead of slamming on the brakes and accelerating more gradually through your first and second gears can save the life of your transmission.

Mainly avoid driving before your engine has warmed up, using the incorrect type of oils and fluids as well as shifting between gears too abruptly. With proper care and maintenance, a transmission can last well over a hundred thousands miles.
