Here’s Why Your Car’s Air Conditioning is Not Working Properly

Temperature control knob in car air conditioning system

Summertime and the livin’ is… HOT. This time of year in this part of California the temperatures can soar above 90 degrees (it was 107 recently!) and when that happens you want your vehicle’s AC (air conditioning) to work well, right? Well, why might your car or truck’s AC not be working properly?

Coolant Leaking

There are several reasons why a vehicle’s AC doesn’t work well. It could be that coolant is leaking, especially where hoses connect. There could also be a problem with the evaporator or compressor. When you’ve got low refrigerant levels, your AC won’t work well. Look for a green oily slick under your car to see if coolant is leaking.

Condenser Issues

What if the condenser breaks? Like a radiator, a condenser lets refrigerant flow into the evaporator and absorb heat when it’s working properly. Maybe contaminants are blocking the flow, though, or you’ve got leaks, so that’s a problem. Also, you might have a bad AC compressor which means air can’t get cooled. Then there’s the aforementioned evaporator. This component delivers cold air to passengers in the vehicle. If there’s a leak, though, or something like leaves block it/vents, you’ve got issues.

Electrical Issues

Could your vehicle be experiencing electrical issues? If so, your AC might fail. Other things that could go wrong with the AC system include a broken blower or cooling fan problems. Most people cannot easily diagnose problems with their own vehicle so they take it to a professional.
